Register Now for NW/MET 2012

Registration is now open for NW/MET 2012. The conference is scheduled for April 22 – 24 in Bellingham, Washington. Our preliminary program includes sessions on Mobile Learning, LMS Migrations, Lecture Capture, Classroom Technologies, Accessibility, Video Conferencing, and the evaluation of new technologies for teaching and learning.

The $200 registration fee covers all meals and includes a visit to the Spark Museum of Electrical Invention as well as a tour of technology facilities at Western Washington University. The conference will be held at the Best Western Lakeway Inn, a comfortable conference hotel conveniently located off of Interstate 5 and near the city center. Hotel rates are $99 US per night by mentioning that you are part of the NW/MET conference. Please complete your registration to the conference by April 5, 2012. The reduced hotel rate is good through March 25, 2012.

Call for 2012 Presentation Proposals

The planning for the 2012 conference of NW/MET has been underway for some time. The venue has been selected and a few programming choices have been made. It is now time to invite our membership to submit proposals to present. The majority (and certainly the most valuable part) of the program comes from the individual contributions made by our members. We rely upon you to identify the topics, trends and technology that should be discussed. Furthermore, your individual experience and expertise, shared among your colleagues, is how we grow our field. Please consider being an active participant.

There are two forms of presentations available for this conference. First, we will have standard presentations of the 60-minute variety. Expect two to three of these types of sessions to be scheduled concurrently so that members will have options on which presentation to attend. These sessions are typically fairly relaxed where interactive questioning is the norm. A second option, called a Lightning Round, is a fast-paced, 5-minute demonstration or presentation. A set of Lighting Round demonstrations will be scheduled together to form a longer session presented in front of all conference participants. Afterwards, a break will allow participants to talk in small groups. These sessions can be any introduction to a topic; everyone is encouraged to propose a Lighting Round. These presentations can be as simple as a quick overview of the projects that you’ve been involved in over the past year.

I encourage everyone with an interest in attending NW/MET 2012 to submit a proposal to present. Additional opportunities for vendors to display and discuss their offerings will also be added to the program.

Our program will be prepared during the month of January. So, please submit your ideas before January 6, 2012.

Shift Happens

This last April, I had the honor of taking over as director of NW/MET for this year at our annual conference held at Skamania Lodge. During my prior year as director-elect, Doug McCartney from PSU mentored me by helping me with all aspects of the conference and my upcoming role in leadership. Since I am a PSU alumni, I was familiar with one of his faculty, Dr. Randy Blazac, as he was one of my undergraduate Sociology professors, so when we were looking for a local faculty speaker to come and give us a reality check perspective, we both thought of Dr. Blazac, and were delighted that he agreed to come and be our keynote speaker.

Dr. Blazak’s keynote speaks to many things under the overarching theme of paradigm shifts in our techno-society and it’s effect on pedagogy, faculty reluctance to adapt, and generational views on technology and it’s uses. His candid style of presenting a holistic perspective tied to popular culture references is something that always engaged me when I was in his “boring lectures” at PSU (Hey Randy, they were never that boring. ;)) and I also knew from experience that he generally doesn’t shy away from telling it like it is, (with academic respect, of course) which I admire for his ability to provoke deep thought.

As he wraps up his talk, he tells us that faculty are working to 'preserve something ancient and sacred in the classroom, the time where you would sit down and talk about something for an hour and only that no matter how boring that may seem because that’s worth defending', and I wonder how many of us working in technological modes of instructional delivery agree or disagree with that statement, or to what degree?

For me, I think technology democratizes our ability to choose for ourselves that mode or style of reaching our learning objectives which works best for us individually. Yes, we have to develop a sense of understanding what that is for ourselves, and that's one form of guidance we in instructional design and curriculum planning may need to re-examine as core to any lifelong learning path.

He also stresses that learning is a communal act in the idea that we go for an hour to one place together to participate in learning, whether it be physical or virtual, but I think there is great value for some in these overworked times to have access via the asynchronous community that now exists online. This is also helpful for those who might prefer to think about what they say and then write it, rather than using live chat in a classroom or virtual space. I want to hear from faculty what experiential essence is perceived lost in translation so I can respect as a technologist what you value enough to preserve it, though I’m always happy when we can turn that into a discussion about what can be found in parallel in the ‘hive’ culture online, feeling myself proud to be a bit of an ambassador to technology in this role with faculty- something else Dr. Blazak expresses as a clear need to support his classroom.

My technology literacy and gamer mindset began in an academic program that gave me access to start building that literacy at an early age, as well as many hours playing Pitfall on the Atari 2600 after school, so I’m not necessarily coming from the same world view as Dr. Blazak. For me who now assumes near ubiquitous access to search engines a default tool in existing, where faculty come in for me is being able to articulate what their subject objectives are, and how to meaningfully assess if they’ve been reached, regardless of the mode of instruction or product generation a student might choose to support their own continued engagement. Our faculty, they’re the people to me that love their subject matter to the point of engagement being contagious, like intellectual fire starters. Though each one of us tend to teach the way we think we learn best as we naturally gravitate towards what we know works (at least for us), learning styles are such an individual and multi-faceted quality that I think we can only guide each learner to find theirs for themselves, and then offer guidance to the myriad of solutions that continue to bloom from what technology enables us to do to support their style.

Over the year of planning for our annual conference, all of the NW/MET board of directors had a hand in the success of our event at Skamania lodge. Each member brings qualities to our community of practice that foster all of our techno-social growth. We’re supporting each other in being the experts our faculty are asking for to guide them in technology selection and adoption. We’re learning to use new tool kits for collaboration so our efforts have greater impact with the reality of reduced resources. We're facing the challenging questions of copyright and universal access as a community.

This presentation by Dr. Blazak is being publicly shared to generate discourse among us, but also as a taste of the sessions that were recorded at NW/MET 11 and are made available to our members first. Access to this community and it's resources have always been 35$ a year, which for me has been some of the best professional development dollars I've spent, and I encourage anyone in our higher Ed tech community from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Western Canada, Montana and Wyoming to join us in our collaborative never-ending evolution.

NW/MET is going 2.0

Hi everyone! Welcome to NW/MET's new blog space.

As NW/MET's current web team, Melany Budiman and I have been charged with evolving the organization's presence on the internet to use the 2.0 toolkit that is now available. A common theme this year emerged from discussions at the conference of our use of these tools and how we're communicating with them- we all appreciate the richness of a democratized discussion, and how the web does more to enable us to share our ideas with each other every day, and would like for more of that to enable communication amongst NW/MET members.

I'm a strong proponent for using these simple tools that can mesh with our daily routines, and hopefully not ask us to bear too much additional cognitive load. I've set up a NW/MET presence on the following sites, so that we have ways to share different kinds of communication media, using tools popular for their simplicity and ease:

  • Need wiki space? We've got a space on Jim Blodget of Chemeketa Community College- a pioneer of our 2.0 world who started last year by beginning a wiki space for nw-met, so that's already set up. Thanks, Jim!
  • On, we're NWMET, and any kind of video that is related to the group can be posted there.
  • At NWMET can post shared PowerPoint style presentations.
  • On, you can sign up for the NWMET tweet feed to receive micro blogged messages from the group.
  • On, There are a host of community enabling tools available- which can include a way to help set up a conference support site quickly (One of the groups stated wants). We're NorthwestMET - come to Ning and join us!
  • Do you have a Profile? LinkedIn is a professional networking tool, and if you are a member of NWMET, you can sign up for our LinkedIn NWMET group to easily network with your peers.
  • Photos can be shared at our Picassa Web Album
  • We also have a group at Why, with all the rest of this? Well, Ning is a great tool for communicating with groups, but sometimes you need for a distributed group discussion to be a little more private and safe. Google Groups offers great permissions settings for sharing conversations and media on the internet. Because of naming requirements, our Google Group is NorthwestMET.
Whew, what a list! The only thing we haven't covered yet is audio files- say, for podcasting or audio generated from presentations. These can either be placed up on YouTube, or we can submit them to iTunes or any other podcast directory, and store them on the server.

Please let us know if you have any comments or suggestions- commenting on a blog post is great for that! It means everyone gets to share in the process, which is exactly what we're aiming for. Now that we have a foundation of tools, my next post will present our plan for how we'll use them! Stay tuned~
